Top Ten Reasons to Migrate to SharePoint 2013 – Part 1
In the first part of our four part series, we discussed the “Current State of SharePoint in the Government.” Based on our experience, we have identified the top ten reasons to move your organization to SharePoint 2013. The next two posts will be a deeper dive into the current challenges that you may face with your SharePoint infrastructure and how the new and updated features found in 2013 can solve these.
Now let’s get started with reasons six through ten.
#10. Content Search: In earlier versions of SharePoint, content search has been the cause of much user frustration and abandonment due to forced navigation to a results page. SharePoint 2013 offers a Content Search web part that will eliminate these issues. This very powerful feature displays search results in a web part that appears on the site in which your user is working – allowing them to easily find content. This feature also allows you to aggregate content based on certain criteria or requirements with Category pages. Use of this web part will deliver relevant content to your users in a consumable format that saves time and reduces complaints from users to the helpdesk when they aren’t able to find what they need.
#9. Scalability and Farm Management: Scaling out your Farm is vital to having an application working at its best. This has been a challenge for many legacy SharePoint environments as this capability has always required custom scripts. SharePoint 2013 makes configuring your farm and optimizing the performance of every server easy, especially in a Virtual Machine environment. This is now an out-of- the-box capability that will aid in planning every service application with no scripts or custom development required – which will increase performance and save you from allocating development assets.
#8. Design Manager: In older versions, it was difficult to brand your SharePoint site. The lack of out-of-the-box flexibility forced you to utilize custom development to create a masterpage. SharePoint 2013 has simplified this with the Design Manager. Using CSS and HTML you can create your HTML layout and the Design Manager will create the masterpage for you. This means you no longer have to hire a developer to custom brand your site.
#7. SharePoint Application Store: In past versions of SharePoint, it was could be very expensive and time consuming to incorporate custom features into your requirements. You most likely had to hire or outsource talent to develop these items. With SharePoint 2013 comes the launch of the app store. Now you can take advantage of the work of many vendors or custom developers and purchase from the SharePoint Store the same way you would download an app for your smartphone or tablet. This saves you the hassle, and more importantly money, needed to fulfill these custom requirements.
#6. OffLine and Sync of Mysites (Other Libraries as well):Older versions of SharePoint required you to make any edits to Mysites online. SharePoint 2013 now has an offline capability, a lot like those found in Outlook and Word. Your users can work on Mysites and SharePoint libraries while offline and sync them once online again. Users can now configure their Mysites with this offline capability on a local drive –for example you can use your C:/ drive on your laptop and sync it up using this amazing new feature.
As you can see the first five capabilities that we have introduced solve some SharePoint issues that have plagued the product since it was launched. SharePoint 2013 is in our view by far the best version that Microsoft has put out.
