Project. Enterprise Knowledge Management System (KMS)
Customer Background. JSOC is located at Fort Bragg, NC and is a joint headquarters designed to study special operations requirements and techniques; ensure interoperability and equipment standardization; plan and conduct joint special operations exercises and training; and develop joint special operations tactics. JSOC serves as a standing Joint Special Operations Task Force responsible for unique special missions: execution, planning, training, tactics, and equipment development.
Business Challenge. JSOC was in need of an enterprise-wide indexing and end-user search solution that would allow the command to leverage their existing directory services and portal infrastructure. In support of over 20,000 users the solution needed to index and search over 15 Terabytes of data for information related to the operation of the command. The majority of information the command sought to index was located on websites, file folders and e-mail (Exchange). JSOC’s desire was to build an integrated enterprise knowledge management solution using Autonomy’s Enterprise Knowledge Management Software, Microsoft’s SharePoint Technologies, Meridio’s Records Management software and MicroLink’s intellectual property Fetch Framework for Autonomy and SharePoint.
Solution. MicroLink was first engaged to provide a proof-of-concept (POC) in a product show-down against Autonomy and a competitive knowledge management (KM) product. MicroLink quickly installed and configured the base system and completed the POC integration components. JSOC selected the best KM product based upon the functional completeness and integration of the solution.
JSOC then selected the MicroLink built solution and at which time JSOC selected MicroLink as the services company to proceed with the full implementation. The initial phase consisted of rolling out the solution to garrison and three remote sites. During the implementation, the MicroLink team worked closely with the Program Management Office to design and build out the base architecture. Once the team built the base architecture, they began a rigid schedule of developing integration and custom components in a services orientated architecture. The team completed thorough unit, system and integration testing to ensure the solution satisfied all the customer requirements. MicroLink launched a fully integrated Enterprise Knowledge Management System for the Joint Special Operations Command.
The command has attributed the success of this engagement to MicroLink’s ability to quickly analyze and understand the customer’s mission, vision, goals and requirements for the project then move rapidly into building an integrated COTS software solution using leading industry technologies from Autonomy, Microsoft and Meridio. MicroLink’s SharePoint federated search framework, Autonomy fetch framework, and custom intellectual property Fetch Framework were essential for the rapid deployment of this system. MicroLink continues to assist JSOC to roll-out of this solution to other remote sites in both CONUS and OCONUS locations.
